Barclays Premier League table standings – April 7

LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United have moved a step closer to defending their title after the champs opened up an eight-point gap on Manchester City in the Barclays Premier League table standings.

Coming into Sunday’s early kick-off against QPR, Manchester United led the fellow city rivals by five points and opened that gap up to eight with a 2-0 result.

The victory saw Sir Alex Ferguson’s men moving to 79 points with six games left to play.

Manchester City were beaten by Arsenal by 1-0 and they second on 71 points – with many believing their title hopes are all but over.

Arsenal, in the meantime, moved back into third place with 61 points, two more than Tottenham, which played to 0-0 draw with Sunderland on Saturday.

Chelsea remains fourth with 56 points, while the top ten was completed by Newcastle (56), Everton (44), Liverpool (43), Sunderland (42), Fulham (42).

Still battling for rival are Bolton (29), QPR (28), Blackburn (28), Wigan (28), Wolverhampton (22).
