MUNICH (Sporting Alert) — Barcelona will check on Lionel Messi before the start of the game to see if he is fit to start in their Champions League semi-final clash with Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.
Messi has been bothered by a nagging injury, but did return to training with his teammates this week after sitting the weekend’s La Liga clash with Levante.
Barcelona’s assistant manager Jordi Roura admitted that the striker is feeling and moving much better in the last few days, but was not prepared to say whether he would play or not.
“In the last few days he has had very good sensations and he seems to be evolving well [from his injury],” Roura said. “But I don’t dare to foresee anything.
“We’ll see how he is now, we’ll hear what the doctors say and tomorrow [Tuesday] we will make a decision.
“When a player is the best in the world of course he conditions the game, the way you play, and of course if you don’t have him you notice that. He has an impact on the game. But we have to wait and see.
“We know that we have decided games without him. But of course having him is important and maybe [Bayern] don’t say that but I am sure they know that too.”
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes fully expects the Argentine international to play Tuesday night.
He added though that even if he doesn’t play, Barcelona will still be a very competitive side in the Allianz Arena.
“I expect he will be able to play and it is not something which is causing me a headache,” he said.
“Barca are about more than just Messi.
“It is not just Messi, they have [Andrés] Iniesta and other good players. They are a collective.”
