Manchester United reported target Axel Witsel was on the score sheet as Benfica humbled Spanish champions Real Madrid 5-2 in a preseason outing on Friday.
Witsel scored the second of Benfica’s goals from a header to even the scoring at 2-2 in just 22-minutes, this was after Javi Garcia had also headed home a 4th minute lead for the Portugal side.
In the middle of those though, Jose Callejon netted twice in quick succession to give Madrid a 2-1 advantage after 21-minutes.
Enzo Perez then grabbed a second half brace – his goals coming in the 53rd and 85th minutes, while Carlos Martins added another in the 59th.
Earlier, Barclays Premier League giants Arsenal and Manchester City clash at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing, China and it was the defending League champions who came away with the win.
First half strikes by Pablo Zabaleta and Yaya Toure was enough to seal the win for City, while Alex” Oxlade-Chamberlain can close for Arsenal and even hit both posts off the same shot.
“It was lively and both teams tried to play. I think we were quite dominant in the first half but suddenly found ourselves down 2-0 against the run of play,” Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger said on www.arsenal.com.
“I feel Manchester City played on a very solid defence with five real defenders and we played forward without calculating too much. We were a bit vulnerable on the counter-attack and that is where we got caught.
“But overall what is important for us is to see everybody play and give everybody competition. We lasted 90 minutes at quite a good level.”
