Manager Sir Alex Ferguson, like he did in the defeat to Chelsea, leaves Rooney out of the squad completely, but Paul Scholes, who like the boss will retire at the end of the season, starts in his final appearance at Old Trafford.

He will play his 717th game for the club.

This is Ferguson’s final home match and his 1499 game in charge.

Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez start up top for United, who also starts Shinji Kagawa and Danny Welbeck in an attacking team.

Rooney was seen in the stands and has joined the thousands with red flags waving at Old Trafford as the stadium gets ready for Ferguson’s home finale.

Ashley Williams, Leon Britton, Jonathan de Guzman. Pablo Hernandez and Michu are all amongst the starters tonight for Swansea City.
