MONTE CARLO (Sporting Alert) — There were lots of contacts and several halts, but Nico Rosberg held his composure to sizzle to an impressive victory on an amazing evening at the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix Sunday.

Rosberg was the fastest in every session and quickest in every lap on his way to the dominating victory with a time of 2:17.52.056 in immaculate performance in the 78 lap race.

Mark Webber was the last man to lead flag to flag in 2010.

“This is very special for me,” said Rosberg, who created history for Mercedes with the win Monaco.

The victory was Mercedes’ first of the season and it ended Red Bull’s run of victories in Monte Carlo.

Several halts, including a crash involving Williams driver Pastor Maldonado slowed Rosberg down, but the German Mercedes driver, who lives in Monaco, responded every time to dominate his challengers on his way to victory.

Red Bull drivers Sebastian Vettel was in second and Mark Webber took third.

Rosberg’s Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton, who battled unsuccessfully hard with Webber for the third spot, was fourth.

Meanwhile, with his finish, Vettel extended his lead in the drivers points standings over Lotus’ Kimi Raikkonen.
