REPORT – No. 9 Miami Hurricanes Hold On For 25-24 Win Over Virginia Tech

By:Kim-Wellington Published on: November 14, 2020 4:35 pm Leave a Comment

BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 9 Miami scored a come from behind 25-24 victory at Virginia Tech on Saturday to continue its impressive form in the pandemic hit season.

The Hurricanes ((7-1, 6-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) trailed for most of the contest at Lane Stadium before battle their way back from a double-digit deficit to come away victorious in Blacksburg.

“What an effort. The resilience of this team week in and week out is special and it’s not shown for the three and a half hours on gameday,” Miami Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz said.

“Some of things that we encountered this week and some of the things that we had to overcome this week just to get here, just to play, and the attitude that our guys kept and the way that they wanted to go play, I’m so proud of them.

“Week in and week out, with all of the adversity that they have to face, they find a way to make it. They play for each other so hard.

Trailing by five with 9:38 left to play, Miami tallied 82 yards from 10 plays to find the end zone and take its first lead of the game when quarterback D’Eriq King found Mark Pope for a 36-yard touchdown to capped the scoring drive.

-Miami’s Winning Drive

Miami then held on to its one-point advantage for 5:59 en route to the win.

“Obviously, we had to grind it out,” Diaz added. “Offensively, we struggled to protect D’Eriq [King] today, but you know, it’s like what we found out last week, defensively, sometimes you are not going to have your ‘A’ game and you have got to find different ways to win games.

“It’s what we’ve been talking about all year; that is what we are learning how to do and we did it. We made the plays in the fourth quarter when we felt like we would. We’ve been strong in the fourth quarter all year and we felt like that would be telling and sure enough it was.

“I’m very proud, very proud to be 7-1. All of the credit goes to the players and they’ve earned it. They’ve earned what they’ve got, every bit of it.”

King finished 24 of 38 for 255 yards and a touchdown, while adding another score on the ground for Canes. Dee Wiggins had eight catches for 106 yards, while Cam’Ron Harris ran for 63 yards on 14 carries and a score.

“D’Eriq is a great leader. He leads the pack,” Wiggins said. “Coming into the fourth quarter, he is always focused. He doesn’t change. You always face adversity in a game and he stays focused during every quarter.”

Virginia Tech was hoping to bounce back from the 38-35 home defeat to Liberty last week, but came up short in the end again.

Hendon Hooker went 19 of 29 for 202 yards and an interception in the defeat for the Hokies (4-4, 4-3 ACC). The home side was unable to get going on offense in the second half, as the final five drives ended with three punts, an interception, and on downs.

The defeat on Saturday means Virginia Tech Hokies has now lost two straight and three of its past four.

MIAMI HURRICANES PLAYER SPEAKS

“It actually felt great putting the team on my back for a moment like that,” Pope said. “[Mike] Harley did it the last time, so I wasn’t really shocked by that. I just saw everybody blitzing, King looked at me, gave me a signal and made it happen.”

“First of all, I got to give all the credit to Hendon Hooker. I think he’s a great quarterback,” Phillips said. “I think Virginia Tech is a very dynamic team. We came into the game, game-planning, expecting him to run the ball and for them to get active like that. In the first half, had a couple mistakes. I know I had a couple mistakes. But then just honing in, really just sticking to the game plan and just kind of taking a deep breath and relaxing and playing Canes football like we know how.”

By:Jeff-Wellin Published on: November 14, 2020 9:17 am Leave a Comment

CINCINNATI – No. 7 Cincinnati is 7-0 for the first time since 2009 after running away with a 55-17 win over East Carolina in its college football today fixture on Friday night. GAME BOOK (PDF) | PHOTO GALLERY

It was the final home fixture for the Bearcats, who finish the regular season with road games at Central Florida, Temple and Tulsa.

Cincinnati led 35-10 at half after blowing the game wide open with a 28 point free-scoring second quarter. This meant that the Bearcats have now scored at least 28 points in the first half of consecutive games for the first time since 2009, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

In that same season, Cincinnati reached the Sugar Bowl and eventually lost to Florida.

On Friday night, quarterback Desmond Ridder completed 24-of-31 passes for a season-high 327 yards and threw for three touchdowns in the win for the Bearcats (7-0, 5-0 American Athletic). It was the first time he passed for over 300 yards in a game this season.

The redshirt junior, who has has contributed 17 touchdowns in the past four games, including nine rushing TDs, also rushed eight times Friday night for another 75 yards and a score, Cincinnati kept its hopes alive for a College Football Playoff berth.

“Once plays break down and I see a hole, I just go,” Ridder said. “The offensive line has done a great job. The preparation has been good.”

ESPN Stats & Info confirmed that Ridder now has 4 straight games with a passing and rushing touchdown, a feat which tied for the longest streak by a FBS player this season. This also tied for the longest streak by a Cincinnati player over the last 20 years.

Cameron Young rushed for a 75 yards score on the night, Jerome Ford ran for two scores, while Tre Tucker, Michael Young Jr. and Jayshon Jackson each caught a TD pass in the dominating victory for Bearcats, whose defense also enjoyed success at home.

East Carolina quarterback Holton Ahlers, who passed for 535 yards in this fixture last season, struggled to get going against the Bearcats’ defense this time, throwing for just 87 yards Friday with three interceptions and was sacked four times.

“There was definitely a different feel than last year,” Bearcats coach Luke Fickell said. “There was only one time he had an opportunity to scramble around. I give the front guys a lot of credit to keep him inside the pocket.”

Fickell hopes his team can ride the current winning momentum in the closing fixtures, which are all on the road.

“We’ll see what we’re really made of,” said Fickell. “It’s going to be quite a stretch with a bullseye on our back. We need to be humble with what we’re doing.”

Keaton Mitchell managed to find a way to rush for 124 yards on 17 carries and touchdown for the Pirates (1-6, 1-5) and Rahjai Harris carried the ball 23 times for 86 yards and a score.

The win saw Cincinnati extending its school-record home winning streak to 19 games, which is the fourth-longest streak among FBS schools.

Miami Hurricanes Ready For Virginia Tech Clash

By:Sports Desk Published on: November 13, 2020 10:52 pm Leave a Comment

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Miami Hurricanes are off to their best start since 2017, but you wouldn’t know it by watching them work.

While the No. 9 Hurricanes are 6-1 and winners of three straight games, they are not getting complacent ahead of this week’s game at Virginia Tech (4-3, 4-2 ACC). Kickoff is set for noon on ESPN.

With a win Saturday, the Hurricanes (6-1, 5-1 ACC) would have at least seven wins in their first eight games for the second time in the last four years (2017, 2020).

A victory also keeps the Canes alive in their quest for an appearance in the ACC Championship Game, but Miami knows it cannot get to the conference championship game in December without taking care of business in November.

“That’s what we talked about,” head coach Manny Diaz said. “I told them I called the ACC and asked them what the tiebreaker was and they said, “Go 1-0 this week.’ That’s all we can control. I’m joking of course when I say that, but nothing else matters.

“If we’re sitting around talking about what December is going to look like, we will get beat in November. Our guys have done a pretty good job with that.

“Every week we sort of pull the lens out and we sort of look where the league is and when we’re done talking about it, we don’t talk about it again for the rest of the week and everything goes into beat Virginia Tech, beat Virginia Tech. Winning on the road in the league, that will be enough for us to focus on in one week.”

Miami leads the all-time series, 22-15, and has won four of the last six matchups against the Hokies but beating Virginia Tech is no easy task. Just last season, Miami erased a 28-point deficit, but ultimately fell to VT, 42-35, inside Hard Rock Stadium.

The longtime foes have met every year since 1992 and the Hokies have a slight advantage on their home turf, going 8-7 in games played in Blacksburg, Va. Miami has won two of the last three matchups at Lane Stadium, including a 38-14 win in its last trip to Blacksburg in 2018.

No.3 Ohio State-Maryland Game Canceled Due To COVID-19 Surge

By:Sports Desk Published on: November 11, 2020 3:08 pm Leave a Comment

A surge in COVID-19 cases in Terrapins’ football program have forced Maryland’s Big Ten college football game against the Buckeyes on Saturday to be canceled.

The football game between No. 3 Ohio State University and the University of Maryland, scheduled for this Saturday at 3 p.m. in College Park, Md., on the Big Ten Network, has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

Maryland announced today in a release that it has paused all team-related activities due to an elevated number of COVID-19 cases within the Terrapin’s program. The release also stated “the joint decision to pause football activities and cancel Saturday’s game was made by Director of Athletics Damon Evans and University of Maryland President Darryll Pines, following a recommendation from University health officials, and in consultation with the Big Ten Conference.”

“The health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes is our main concern,” head football coach Ryan Day said. “Obviously, we are disappointed at not being able to compete this week, but I am incredibly proud of our team and the way they have handled themselves throughout this entire pandemic.

“We wish Maryland, their student-athletes and programs well as they battle through this issue.”

Maryland director of Athletics Damon Evans and University of Maryland President Darryll Pines, following a recommendation from University health officials, and in consultation with the Big Ten Conference. Over the past seven days, eight football players have tested positive for COVID-19.

“There is nothing more important than the health and well-being of our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” Evans said.

“We realize that this news is disappointing to all of the Maryland fans out there who were looking forward to the Terps taking on an outstanding Ohio State team, but the responsible thing for us to do is pause football activities, given the number of positive cases currently in our program.”

“We’re obviously extremely disappointed that we’ll be unable to host Ohio State this Saturday,” said head coach Michael Locksley. “It was an opportunity that our team was preparing for and excited about.

However, we have and always will keep our players, coaches and staffs safety at the forefront of our decision making process. We’ll continue to operate as much as we can virtually as we monitor the situation in hopes of returning to play when it’s deemed safe.”
