PARIS (Sporting Alert) — Barcelona will wait until game time to decide on whether midfielder Xavi and full-back Jordi Alba are fit enough to face PSG in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.
The Spanish internationals who were hampered by hamstring injuries, which forced them out of the 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo on Saturday, returned to training on Monday, but Tito Vilanova, who will be back in the Barca dugout and his coaching staff, will wait until late to make his final decision.
“We will decide on the day of the match whether they can play, but they are progressing well,” said Barcelona assistant manager Jordi Roura, who led the team in Vilanova’s absence.
After starting on the bench on Saturday, David Villa is expected to return to the starting line-up to play alongside Lionel Messi and Alexis Sanchez.
Also expected back in Barcelona starting lineup are Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Javier Mascherano and Victor Valdes.
PSG, meanwhile will have striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic available for the game after having a two-match European ban for his sending off in the first leg of their last-16 clash with Valencia cut to just one game and the Sweden international is delighted to line up against his former club.
“I would have been disappointed, it’s a game everyone wants to play in,” Ibrahimovic said.
“I thought the red card was a hard judgement from the referee and when I got two games, that was even harder, but afterwards we appealed and took one game away and I became very happy.”
The game will also see former Real Madrid star David Beckham back in Champions League action.
Also in action on Tuesday is the clash between Bayern Munich and the visiting Juventus at Allianz Arena.
“It’s going to be a very high-quality game between two evenly-matched teams,” said Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes.
“It’s going to be a typical Champions League quarter-final.”
He added: “Juventus are one of Europe’s top teams. They are very Italian, yet they are also very creative.
“They are very strong physically. Antonio Conte has done a great job with them in recent years and you can see his signature on this side.”
Juventus are sitting a top of the Serie A, while Bayern Munich are one game away from lifting the Bundesliga title.
