LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Chelsea became the first Champions League defending champions to get dumped from the competition in the group stage, despite registering a thumping 6-1 victory over FC Nordsjaelland on Wednesday night.
Fernando Torres scored twice, in the 45th and 56th minutes of play and David Luiz, Gary Cahill, Juan Mata and Oscar all netted in the comfortable win.
Joshua John scored the lone goal for Nordsjaelland.
The win, however, was not enough for Chelsea, as Juventus beat Shakhtar 1-0 on an own goal by Oleksandr Kucher to top the group.
Also picking up wins on the final day of group matches on Wednesday were Bayern Munich, which hammered BATE 4-1, Valencia, who edged Lille 1-0 in Group F, while Kris Commons netted an 82nd minute penalty to send Celtic through from Group G after beating Spartak Moscow.
Manchester United were also beaten on Wednesday night – going down 1-0 to Cluj at Old Trafford.
However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side had already won the group and therefore the result means nothing.
