Fernando Torres’ Miss Against Corinthians
YOKOHAMA (Sporting Alert) — There will be no World Club glory for Rafa Benitez and Chelsea FC after Corinthians defeated the Barclays Premier League side in the final at International Stadium Yokohama.
Chelsea defender Gary Cahill was also sent off late in the game.
Peru forward Paolo Guerrero scored the all important goal for Corinthians of Brazil in the 69th minute of play.
A strike from Danilo was deflected and Guerrero managed power his header past three Chelsea defenders on the line.
Chelsea interim manager Rafa Benitez was hoping for, and heavily pipped by many to win his first trophy with the Blues today, but it was never to be, as the European Champions struggled to break down an organized Corinthians side.
“It’s always going to be a tough game,” Chelsea captain Frank Lampard, who started in midfield today said.
“They are a very organized and good team.
“It’s disappointing out here not to have won it.”
Lampard added: “We will now have to go and make a run in the league and the FA Cup.”
Chelsea had a glorious chance to score an equalizer, but Fernando Torres missed his opportunity, which was saved by golden ball winner Cassio, although the Spaniard gave the goalkeeper little work to do from six yards out by hitting his shot straight at the rushing shot stopper.
Cassio had also kept out Victor Moses earlier.
Torres did found the net, but was rightfully ruled offside.
