NO.2 KENTUCKY 74, NO. 5 DUKE 63
CHICAGO — Tyler Ulis collected 18 points and six assists to lead No. 2 Kentucky to a 74-63 victory over No. 5 Duke in the 2015 State Farm Champions Classic on Tuesday night.
The Wildcats, who only trailed Duke once during this contest when the Blue Devils took a 20-18 lead with 8:50 left in the first half, was just too athletic and quick for the defending champions who turned the ball over 16 times on the night.
Jamal Murray added 16 points, five assists, five rebounds and four steals, Isaiah Briscoe scored 12 points and Marcus Lee grabbed a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (3-0) to stay undefeated this season.
The SEC powerhouses will next face Wright State on Friday night.
Amile Jefferson led Duke (2-1) with a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds and Matt Jones also scored 16 points, but leading scorer Grayson Allen, who came into the game scoring 27.0 points per contest was held to six.
Allen went 0-for-9 from the field in the first half and ended the game shooting 2-for-11.
Marshall Plumlee ended with 12 points, 10 rebounds and had six blocked shots for the Blue Devils, who take on VCU in Madison Square Garden on Friday night.
No. 13 MICHIGAN STATE 79, No. 4 KANSAS 73
CHICAGO — Denzel Valentine compiled a triple-double of 29 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists, and No. 13 Michigan State beat No. 4 Kansas 79-74 in the 2015 State Farm Champions Classic on Tuesday night.
Valentine, who had career-highs in points and assists per game, kept the Spartans (2-0) close to the Jayhawks throughout the battle by hitting some big shots. He went 10-for-23 from the field on shooting and played a team-leading 38 minutes.
Bryn Forbes hit three 3-pointers and ended with 13 points, while Matt Costello finished with 10 points and nine boards for Michigan State, which twice trailed by 11 points in the game.
Perry Ellis led Kansas with 21 points and six rebounds, while Frank Mason III added 14 points, five rebounds and three steals and Wayne Selden Jr. had 12 points in the defeat for the Jayhawks (1-1) who led 41-35 at halftime.
TULSA 77, No. 9 WICHITA STATE 67
TULSA, Okla. — Shaquille Harrison scored 20 points to help the unranked Tulsa take down No. 9 Wichita State 77-67 in college basketball action on Tuesday night.
Harrison, who shot 6-for-10 from the floor and hit two of his three 3-pointers, also grabbed five rebounds in the win.
Marquel Curtis added 16 points off the bench, Pat Birt scored 14 and James Woodard finished with 13 in the win for the Golden Hurricane (2-0), who snapped a seven-game losing streak in the series.
Ron Baker led the Shockers (1-1) with 23 points, four rebounds and four steals and Anton Grady added 18 and nine boards.
Fred VanVleet, who is being bothered by a sprained ankle and sore hamstring, had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists in the defeat for Wichita State on the night.
