College Football Playoff Latest Rankings Week 2 — Dec. 1

Alabama remained No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings for Week 2, as the the top seven teams stayed unchanged in the latest release on Tuesday night.

The Crimson Tide top the rankings ahead of Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State which continue to occupy the top four places.

Alabama and Clemson showed just how they are by securing dominant wins, while Notre Dame got the better of a ranked North Carolina side in a key ACC battle.

So with the top three a no brainer, the focus turned on Ohio States to see where it would have been placed by the selection committee in Week 2 due to the team being inactive over the weekend.

The Buckeyes were forced to cancel their game at Illinois on Saturday because of the increase in positive COVID-19 cases within the program.

However, the Big Ten outfits managed to keep their spot at No. 4, despite playing just four games so far this season.

Ohio State stayed ahead of one-loss Texas A&M and Florida, which both picked up wins over LSU and Kentucky, respectively over the weekend.

“When those two teams were put side-by-side this morning and last night, there just wasn’t enough there to put Texas A&M ahead of Ohio State,” Selection committee chairman Gary Barta said.

Barta noted that the selection committee thinks Ohio State is a much better team that those ranked below them, and part of the reason to keep the Buckeyes ahead of both the Aggies and the Gators, is the top-ranked offense, which is led by quarterback Justin Fields.

Texas A&M is at No. 5, No. 6 Florida, No. 7 Cincinnati, holding their spots from a week ago, but Georgia moved up one place to No. 8. Iowa State, which beat Texas last week in No. 9 after moving four places, while No. 10 Miami keeps its spot.

Oklahoma, Indiana and BYU are No. 11 through No. 13, while Northwestern, which was the only team in the initial College Football Playoff top 10 to fall this week, dropped six spots to No. 14 after the loss to Michigan State.
