The Jamaica Reggae Boyz are not on the radar for to get anything at the much-feared Azteca Stadium, but experienced goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts believes anything is possible.
“Nothing in life is impossible, but we know that Mexico has a great league and good players,” Ricketts was quoted as saying in the Jamaica Observer.
“We know that we are not favourites, but we are not going to resign or give up and give them the victory before time, we are going to fight,” he added.
Mexico are known for scoring heavy against Jamaica at the Azteca, scoring 13 unanswered at this venue in the last three World Cup meetings, and Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez is one of the players the Caribbean side must keep a close eye on.
Hernandez may not be playing at Old Trafford where he’s very dangerous, but Jamaica’s assistant coach Alfredo Montesso says the Azteca is just as intimidating.
“The stadium is very intimidating,” Montesso said in the Observer, adding, “but we have a very experienced group now who are accustomed to playing in top leagues, not just the UK-based players, who are experienced.
“You can see that they are in the right frame, they are in competition mode. We are looking for the best performance possible from the team because we know what the result will be a consequence of the performance.”
He added: “It is crucial that they don’t feel intimidated, it is crucial that they don’t sit back in our defensive field, it’s crucial that we attack them as well.
“It’s crucial that we work the wings, so they will know that they have to do and I’m sure that they are going to do the best they can and that we will get a good result.”
The top-three nation from the CONCACAF hexagonal round will punch their World Cup Finals places next summer, while the fourth-placed finisher will get another shot with a two legged play-off tie with the winner from the Oceania region.
