MANCHESTER, Sporting Alert – Is David de Gea about to make Real Madrid pay for being too cheap and indecisive in their pursue to sign him this summer?
De Gea had looked well set to join Real Madrid after he reportedly agreed personal terms with the Spanish side during the summer transfer window.
However, the deal fell through last minute after the Spanish La Liga side failed to finalise terms with Manchester United for the player.
Now El Confidencial is reporting that the Spanish international wants to sign a contract extension with the English Premier League outfits.
According to the El Confidencial, De Gea, whose contract runs out at the end of the season, is looking to secure a new deal with Manchester United that will increase his salary from £35,000 per-week.
The Red Devils, who offered him a new contract before, have made it clear that the player would not be frozen out of the first team if he didn’t want to sign an extension.
The 24-year-old is yet to make a competitive appearance for Manchester United this season with manager Louis van Gaal saying he was not focused enough to play following the interest from Madrid.
However, the club’s best player in the last two season is expected to return to the starting lineup for this weekend’s Premier League clash with fierce rivals Liverpool and his teammates say the world-class shot-stopper will be welcomed back.
Juan Mata, a close friend of De Gea, and the man who helped him during the down times after seeing his dream move to Real Madrid fell through, says everyone at the club is confident the star man will come good again when he returns.
“I don’t think there is going to be any type of problem upon his return, neither from the club, nor the coach or the fans,” Mata told EFE.
“This is what I perceive. The fans love him a lot, he is very well considered by the club and by the coach. I believe everything will continue to be the same.”
Meanwhile, former Manchester United assistant manager Steve Round is also backing the club to support De Gea to return against Liverpool on Saturday.
“He’s an integral part of the United team and so influential. The players have no problem with David,” Round told Sky Sports News HQ.
“He’s such a good professional and a good guy around the place and very popular. I think they’ll welcome him back without a doubt. There won’t be any issues within the dressing room whatsoever.
“The boys will be glad to see him play, he is such a good goalkeeper and if I was a defender, I would want De Gea behind me.
“And there are no bigger games. This is massive and he’ll want to play in this game. Go out there and prove your worth, show what you’re about.
“And it would be a great game for him to re-establish himself, not only with the manager, the team, the fans but also himself.”
