Diego has been bothered by a hamstring injury and it was suggested that the Atlético Madrid forward would have been given more time to recover from the problem.

However, he starts this evening as the main striker with Cesc Fàbregas and Pedro also starting in the attack as well.

Andrés Iniesta, Xabi Alonso are joined in midfield by another Atlético Madrid player, Koke, with Javi Martínez, Juanfran, Sergio Sergio and Jordi Alba in the back line.

Xavi, Sergio Busquets, Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla, Gerard Piqué, David Silva and Fernando Torres are all amongst the players on a very strong bench for Spain.

Spain, the defending champions from 2010 in South Africa, are in Group B with the Netherlands, Chile and Australia.

The defending champs, the No.1 team in the FIFA World Rankings, open up against the Netherlands.
