LONDON, Sporting Alert – Quarterfinals draw for the EFL Cup with Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal all included.
Jose Mourinho and Manchester United have been rewarded for knocking out holders Manchester City with a date with West Ham United at Old Trafford.
Spanish midfielder Juan Mata scored the lone goal for the Red Devils in a 1-0 victory over the Citizens, as Mourinho’s men bounced back from the 4-0 embarrassing defeat suffered at the hands of Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
“After the defeat at Chelsea, to have this support is incredible,” Mourinho said. “The love that these people have for the club is bigger than the result, it is bigger than the success and the trophies.
“It is real love and it is real passion. I am very happy for them, I don’t care about myself. I am not happy because it is important for me, I am happy for the fans.
“I am happy for the players because they have absolutely everything. The performance was good, it was not phenomenal, but it was good.
“What was phenomenal was the spirit, the effort and the solidarity. This is the minimum that we can give to the fans.”
West Ham United defeated Antonio Conte’s Blues side 2-1 in their EFL Cup fourth round game following goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Edimilson Fernandes on either side of 45 minutes.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will take on Southampton in their quarterfinal clash at Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners eased past Reading 2-0 on Tuesday evening with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netting both goals for Arsene Wenger’s side.
Southampton earned the trip to London after they narrowly edged Sunderland 1-0 in their fourth round match.
Black Cats boss David Moyes was sent to the stands.
Elsewhere, Liverpool, who dumped fellow English Premier League side Tottenham, will host Leeds, while Hull City have a difficult matchup with Championship leaders Newcastle United.
Newcastle blasted Preston 6-0 in their game on Tuesday, while Hull City edged Bristol City 2-1.
Leeds United booked their spot in the EFL Cup quarterfinal after getting the better of Norwich City 3-2 on penalties.
Both sides finished 2-2 in regulation and extra-time.
