FINAL SCORES Manchester United 1 vs 0 West Ham

At Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the ninth minute, but did missed a penalty kick in the second half as the English Premier League leaders beat West Ham 1-0.

Rooney slid home from close range after his strike partner Javier Hernandez crossed to him. The England international was making a return from a knee injury he picked up during a training session on Christmas morning.

With United looking shaky in the closing minutes, Rooney missed a glorious opportunity to give his side a 2-0 cushion, but the striker fired over the bar.

A disappointed Sir Alex Ferguson says his side must involve from the spot, after missing its fifth spot-kick on the season so far.

“I don’t think it is just one of those things,” the manager told Manutd.com. “I think we have to improve at that.

“If you get a penalty kick, really… there has been talk about (the good penalty record of) Rickie Lambert at Southampton. That is what taking penalty kicks is about.

“There have been several great examples over the years – (former Southampton midfielder) Matthew Le Tissier scoring 47 out of 48.

“A penalty kick is your opportunity to take advantage of a foul or a handball or whatever and score a goal.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal got a late winner from midfielder Jack Wilshere fired the Gunners into the fourth round as well with an impressive in a 1-0 victory over Swansea at the Emirates Stadium.

“Yes, he was outstanding tonight,” Wenger said of Wilshere’s performance on www.arsenal.com. “I felt many players played well.

“As a team we played well and he was in a different position, he was high up and it suits him well. I have no experience of player being out for 17 months in my whole career.

“But honestly I always said that if we got Jack on January 1, then we would have done well. But he is ahead of what I could imagine.
