2016-17 English Premier League Scores, Table Standings: Week 1

Jose Mourinho of Manchester United

LONDON, Sporting Alert – Results, scores and the table standings after Week 1 of the English Premier League new season, as the race for this year’s title gets off to an interesting start.

Title chasers Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, but defending champion Leicester City fell to newly promoted Hull City in the defence of its domestic league title.

Jose Mourinho begins his stint at Old Trafford on a winning note, after his Manchester United side beat Bournemouth 3-1 on the road, with Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all getting on the scoresheet for the Red Devils.

Getting their Premier League debut underway were Antonio Conte with Chelsea and Pep Guardiola with Manchester City.

Conte watched his Blues side edged a tough West Ham United team 2-1, with Diego Costa scoring a late winner after Eden Hazard had opened the scoring from the penalty spot.

Manchester City also had a narrow 2-1 win over Sunderland – giving Guardiola a winning start to what is expected to be a tough season in the EPL.

Liverpool and Arsenal shared a seven-goal thriller, with Jurgen Klopp’s men taking the victory 4-3.

Philippe Coutinho netted a brace for the Reds, as Arsene Wenger and the Gunners failed in their rally.

Securing a win in the opening week of the English Premier League were Swansea City, which tagged Burnley 1-0 and West Bromwich Albion, which picked up a similar result over Crystal Palace.

In other results, Everton and Tottenham Hotspur finished 1-1, so too did Southampton and Watford and Middlesbrough and Stoke City 1

Manchester United leads the EPL table standings on goal difference, as seven teams start the opening week with victories.
