LONDON (Sporting Alert) — English Premier League (EPL) side Arsenal is all but out of the Champions League after losing 3-1 to the visiting Bayern Munich in the last 16 first leg on Tuesday.
Bayern Munich jumped on the EPL side early with Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller scoring in the opening 21-minutes to give the Germans a 2-0 half-time lead.
Former Bayern Munich forward Lukas Podolski pulled a goal back for Arsenal ten-minutes into the second half and Olivier Giroud missed a glorious chance to even things up immediately after coming on in the 72nd minute.
However, Bayern pushed for a third and the German league leaders got the important goal through Mario Mandzukic in the 77th minute to sink Arsene Wenger’s side, which now dropped back-to-back game at home after losing to Blackburn in the FA Cup on Saturday.
“Let’s not hide the truth: it will be extremely difficult against a team of that quality,” Wenger said on Arsenal.com.
“They (Bayern Munich) didn’t play two finals in the last three years without that quality that we have seen tonight.
“We have to give our best there and hope that everything will go for us and hope that by the second leg we have built our confidence up a bit more to go into the game with the belief that will be needed.”
The defeat was not taken lightly by the Arsenal fans, who booed the team off the pitch at half-time.
Arsenal are 5th in the EPL standings, four behind fourth place Tottenham.
