(Sporting Alert) — Southampton pulled off one of the shocks of the season so far after beating defending champions Manchester City 3-1 in the English Premier League on Saturday.
In other results, Tottenham edged Newcastle United 2-1, Swansea City hammered QPR 4-1 and Chelsea battered Wigan by the same scoreline.
Entering the game as the huge underdogs, Southampton stunned the champs early and send St Mary’s Stadium rocking with two early goals from Jason Puncheon and Steven Davis in the seventh and 22nd minutes.
Manchester City pulled a goal back through Edin Dzeko five minutes before the half-time interval, but a Gareth Barry own goal three minutes into the second half sealed the stunning upset for the Saints.
Also on Saturday, 10-man Arsenal defeated Sunderland 1-0 with Santi Cazorla getting the all important goal 36th minute. Defender Carl Jenkinson was sent off after two bookable offenses.
Robert Huth and Cameron Jerome scored second half goals and Stoke City beat Reading 2-1, while Norwich fired blank against Fulham at home.
