Fergie: I have no idea why Nani took the penalty kick

MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is still puzzled as to why Nani, rather than Robin van Persie, took the penalty kick against Galatasaray in the opening Champions League game at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Right-back Rafael da Silva was brought down after he was tripped by Burak Yılmaz in the second half and Nani shockingly stepped up to take spot kick.

Nani’s stutter-stepping antics threw everyone off, including the kick-take himself and his resulting shot was saved by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, which left Ferguson fuming.

Fergie wanted his top striker Van Persie to take the kick, despite his miss against Southampton when he eventually scored a hat-trick in the comeback win.

The boss has vowed to nominate who will take the penalty kicks before Sunday’s Barclays Premier League against Liverpool.

“To be honest with you, I have no idea why Nani took it,” said the United manager. “I think Nani just ran and grabbed the ball.

“I thought Robin should have taken it, to be honest with you. I think we will have to decide before the game, which is my fault, I should have done that.

His side went on to win the game 1-0, following Michael Carricks’ first half sweep home, but how things could have been different.

“We missed so many chances in the second half, that was the worrying part,” he added.

“Missing the penalty just after half-time still keeps them in the game. If it goes 2-0 at that stage, it would have been very difficult for them to get back.”
