FLEETWOOD, Sporting Alert – Roberto Firmino netted a brace and Liverpool dominated the second half en route to a comfortable 5-0 win over Fleetwood Town in a pre-season game on Wednesday (13).
Firmino, who entered the game as a half-time substitute, after Reds manager Jurgen Klopp made 11 changes for the second 45 minutes, found the back of the net in the 71st and 90th minutes of the contest, as Liverpool scored four goals in the second half.
Marko Grujic, who was making his first appearance for Liverpool since signing in January, opened the scoring for the visitors when he fired home a low cross from Alberto Moreno in the 18th minute.
Prior to that, the Serbian midfielder was tripped up inside the penalty area, following a neat piece of skill to get away from his marker – and Liverpool was awarded a penalty kick.
Danny Ings stepped up and took the spot kick, but his low effort was kept out by the Fleetwood goalkeeper Chris Neal in the 12th minute.
Liverpool went into the break with a slim 1-0 lead, but turned up the intensity in the second half to collect four more goals, as Ben Woodburn, another half-time sub, took just seven minutes to get on the scoresheet to double the lead.
Defensive midfielder Lucas then made it 3-0 in the 69th minute before Firmino grabbed his brace with the club’s last two goals.
Substitute goalkeeper Alex Cairns was called on to make several saves in the second, and at one point denied both Woodburn, who had an outstanding game, and Kent, from scoring in quick succession when the score was at 2-0.
