LONDON (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United stumbled to a defeat to Everton in their opening Barclays Premier League on Monday night.

United were hoping to join the likes of Chelsea and defending champions Manchester City on three points after the opening fixtures – but were beaten 1-0 at Goodison Park.

It was also a disappointing for new summer signing Robin van Persie who failed to make an impact off the bench.

On Saturday champions Manchester City defeated Southampton 3-2 in a closely contested game that saw Roberto Mancini side having to dig deep into its reserves to pull off the victory.

Chelsea had an easy 2-0 win over Wigan on Sunday with new signing Eden Hazard starring on the afternoon – playing a part in both goals, which came in the first half.
