The Bayern Munich attacking midfielder has been on the doubtful list for EURO 2012, but with him being named on the bench the coaching and medical staff are confident he will be fit enough to play in the tournament.
Germany made several changes to the side which suffered a 5-3 defeat to Switzerland over the weekend – with captain Philipp Lahm coming back to lead the side.
Also starting tonight are Bayern Munich hitman Mario Gomez, who plays alongside Lukas Podolski in the forward position.
Sami Khedira, Toni Kroos, Mesut Ozil and Marco Reus all start also with the likes of Miroslav Klose, Mario Gotze and Thomas Muller amongst those with Schweinsteiger on the bench.
Chelsea winger Yossi Benayoun, who was loaned out to Arsenal for half of a season, is amongst the top players for Israel, who also started with the experienced Tal Ben Haim in the back.
