The improving San Diego advanced to the first Elite Eight in program history with its victory over Kentucky on Thursday night in the Sweet 16, and the Toreros will be hoping to extend their good form and join three other teams in the NCAA National Volleyball Semifinal in Omaha, Nebraska.
Prior to this season, San Diego had reached the NCAA Tournament’s Regional Semifinal on four occasions (2004, 2006, 2013, 2018), but was 0-4 in those previous matches and had never advanced.
The team enters Saturday night’s clash against the highly fancied Stanford on a 27-match win streak, which is the longest in program history and the longest active streak in NCAA Division I.
Stanford secured its place in this encounter after the No. 1 seed Cardinal rallied from an early first-set deficit to sweep No. 5 seed Houston on Thursday in the regional semifinals at Maples Pavilion.
That win was the 21st straight for Stanford and the 135th NCAA Tournament victory for the Cardinal – the most all-time.
