MADRID (Sporting Alert) — Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho believes it is time for Cristiano Ronaldo to emerge from the shadow of Lionel Messi and win the Ballon d’Or.
The Portugal international has been sensational since joining Real Madrid from Manchester United, but has struggled to beat out Messi for several top awards.
The two are expected to go head-to-head for the Ballon d’Or award and Mourinho thinks Ronaldo should win, especially since the Portuguese had won a major title with Real Madrid, while Messi didn’t win one with Barcelona.
“If Cristiano doesn’t win the Ballon d’or this year, it’s only because he’s not nice, because he doesn’t sell his image well,” Mourinho was quoted as Portuguese sports daily A Bola on Friday.
“Messi has grown up in the team in which he plays, with the players he plays alongside.
“Not Cristiano, who was in England and whom we put into a team that was a losing one.”
He added the Ronaldo goes through tougher than Messi.
He is “a winger who scores as many goals as a No 9, a player who is not protected from anything or anybody,” Mourinho said.
“It’s much tougher being Cristiano than Messi.”
