Kansas Assistant Coach Joe Dooley Suspended Three Weeks Following DUI Arrest

Kansas men’s basketball assistant coach Joe Dooley will serve a three-week suspension after being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, head coach Bill Self announced Sunday.

“Joe is remorseful, apologetic, and accepts the consequences of his actions,” Self said.

Dooley, 60, has worked under Self at Kansas during two separate periods. He first joined Self’s staff when Self left Illinois to replace Roy Williams as Kansas head coach. Between his two stints at Kansas, Dooley held multiple coaching positions across college basketball.

He served as the head coach at Florida Gulf Coast from 2013 to 2018, winning 20 games in all five seasons. He took over the program after Andy Enfield led the Eagles to the Sweet 16 during their famous “Dunk City” run. Before and after his time at FGCU, Dooley worked as an assistant at South Carolina, New Mexico and Wyoming, and spent eight years at East Carolina—four as an assistant and four as head coach.

Dooley returned to East Carolina as head coach in 2018 but was fired after four seasons in 2022. He then rejoined Self’s staff at Kansas, where he currently serves as an assistant coach.
