LOS ANGELES (Sporting Alert) — Mike Brown has paid for a sloppy start to the new NBA season with the Los Angeles Lakers firing him as head coach after a 1-4 start to the season, the club is now reporting.
There have been several reports last week that the former Cleveland Cavaliers coach future with Lakers was in serious doubt and ESPNLosAngeles.com is now reporting that after losing four of five games to start the campaign he’s no longer the boss.
This was announced on Friday by General Manager Mitch Kupchak.
“This was a difficult and painful decision to make,” said Kupchak said in a release by Lakers.com. “Mike was very hard-working and dedicated, but we felt it was in the best interest of the team to make a change at this time.
“We appreciate Mike’s efforts and contributions and wish him and his family the best of luck.”
Assistant coaches Bernie Bickerstaff will take over on an interim basis until the Lakers find a suitable replacement.
In fact, Bickerstaff will lead the team this Friday night when the side play host to the on form Golden State Warriors.
After losing their last game, there were signs that several players, including Kobe Bryant, were frustrated with the way things were going and would welcome a change.
