NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — The Los Angeles Lakers fell to its fourth successive defeat on Thursday night, following a 116-107 loss to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
Carmelo Anthony, despite playing just 22minutes after picking up an ankle injury in the second half, finished with 30 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field, as the Knicks improved to 17-5 this season.
Kobe Bryant collected 31 points 10 rebounds and six assists for the Lakers, who fell short of New York’s total to slip to a disappointing 9-14 record on the season.
The Knicks, playing like a title wanting team this early season, dominated the first half to take a 68-49 lead, with Anthony scoring 22 of his total points during an attacking period .
The forward was forced to leave the game with a left ankle sprain midway into the third quarter and the Lakers tried to make a run.
Bryant, after a poor start and fighting battling back spasms, came alive in the final quarter, but his efforts again was not enough.
New York collected 18 points and eight assists from guard Raymond Felton, while Tyson Chandler and J.R. Smith each had 18 points in the win for the Knicks, which won its last three games.
Metta World Peace supported Bryant with 23 points and six boards, with Dwight Howard adding 20 points and seven rebounds.
Devin Ebanks finished with 15 off the bench for the Lakers as well.
Mike D’Antoni and the Lakers were again without Pau Gasol, who has now missed the past five games with tendinitis in his knees and point guard Steve Nash, who is also injured.
