PITTSBURGH, Sporting Alert — NFL scores, results and box score links for the Week 2 games that took place on Sunday, September 18.

The Pittsburgh Steelers led seven teams collecting a pair of wins in the opening two games to start the season, while the Carolina Panthers bounced back from their Week 1 defeat to put up the most points in the second week.

STEELERS 24, BENGALS 16

Pittsburgh (2-0) impressively beat the Cincinnati Bengals 24-16 at Heinz Field to show its early title contending form.

Despite tossing a pair of interceptions, Ben Roethlisberger played an effective role for the Steelers in the win, as he threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns against the Bengals.

DeAngelo Williams ran for 94 yards and took a touchdown catch, while Jesse James and Xavier Grimble also caught passes from Roethlisberger for touchdowns.

Defensively, Ryan Shazier finished with 11 tackles, including five solos, with Lawrence Timmons finishing with seven tackles – with six of those being solo.

Andy Dalton went 31 of 54 on completed passes and threw for 366 yards and a touchdown pass to Giovani Bernard in the defeat for the Bengals (1-1).

The game was a rematch of the wild-card round clash in January which was won by the Steelers.

PANTHERS 46, 49ERS 27

Cam Newton threw for 353 yards and four touchdowns on his way to a milestone, as the Carolina Panthers (1-1) used a strong second half to beat the San Francisco 49ers 46-27 in their home opener on Sunday.

Newton, who went 24 of 40 on completed passes, toss two TD passes to Kelvin Benjamin and one each to Greg Olsen and Devin Funchess, which saw the 2015 league MVP moving above Jake Delhomme for most touchdown passes in franchise history with 122.

Blaine Gabbert passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in the defeat for the 49ers (1-1), who scored 17 points in the fourth quarter, but were outscored 29-17 in the second half.

Also getting off to 2-0 starts this season were the Denver Broncos, who turned back the Indianapolis Colts 34-20, the Minnesota Vikings, who edged the Green Bay Packers 17-14, Baltimore, which beat Cleveland 25-20, the Giants, who defeated the Saints 16-13, as well as New England, which beat Miami 31-24 and Houston, which topped Kansas City Chiefs 19-12.
