Watch Video Highlights of Leighton Baines Free-kick vs Newcastle
NEWCASTLE (Sporting Alert) — Leighton Baines scored a stunning free-kick in the first to help Everton beat Newcastle 2-1 in the Barclays Premier League at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
But it was Newcastle United who took the lead when striker Papiss Cisse headed home from close range in the 2nd minute.
Everton grabbed the equalizer through Baines, who riffled home a free-kick past Tim Krul two minutes before the half-time interval after Marouane Fellaini had been fouled.
“It was a massive three points,” Baines told Sky Sports 1.
“We were off the back of a defeat and Newcastle are fighting at the moment so we knew it would be tough.
“They set off at a hard pace but we fought back.”
Baines added: “We don’t know (how far we can go). We have not talked about it a lot.
“We just have to keep winning games and putting in good performances. If we can stay around the boys at the top as long as we can hopefully we will give ourselves something to go for at the end of the season.”
Victor Anichebe then netted the winner for Everton two-minutes after coming on as a substitute for David Moyes side to grab all three points and moved past Arsenal into the fifth place in the Premier League table.
Newcastle played without without leading striker Demba Ba after the Senegal international went to meet with Chelsea over a possible transfer move this week.
