BARCELONA (Sporting Alert) — Lionel Messi says he is feeling better after sustaining a knee injury during a Champions League match against Benfica on Wednesday night.
Messi collided with the goalkeeper of Benfica late in the second half of the game and he admitted to fearing the worst when he went down with what turned out to be a knee contusion.
“When I felt the knock I thought of the worst possible scenario because of the pain, I thought I would miss months of play,” Messi said on FC Barcelona official website at www.fcbarcelona.com.
“After the doctors ruled out a serious injury, I was much more calm about it all.”
He added: “I finished the action with a shot because I was in pain and I thought it would be the last time I’d touch a ball for a long time.”
Despite feeling better the Argentine striker wasn’t sure if he would play in Sunday’s La Liga game at Real Betis.
“I don’t know if I’ll play on Sunday, it depends on my recovery,” he said.
“The team has a lot of players that can fill the void. I’m very grateful for the show of support from the people and from Barça. Experiencing that makes me happy.”
Messi, one of the greatest players to ever play the game, is one goal away from equalling a Gerd Muller’s 40-year-old scoring record.
He has scored 84 goals in 2012 and has four games to catch Mueller.
Many believes if he plays one more game in 2012, he’ll own the record.
