The match of the day is expected to come from the Group D at Etihad Stadium where Manchester City will host last year’s winners and German side Bayern Munich.

It is will also see City boss Manuel Pellegrini renewing his rivalry with Pep Guardiola and the latter, a former Barcelona manager, believes the Premier League side has enough power to make the final this year.

“Manchester City are one of the biggest clubs in Europe. I think they have made big steps forward,” Guardiola said. “My impression is if they qualify, Manchester City will be one of the toughest teams in the next round.

“The same happened with Borussia Dortmund last season.

“They qualified for the next round for the first time and went on to the final.

“I think the same can happen for Manchester City. I don’t know if I’m right but I have this feeling.”

Manchester United won their group opener last month, but David Moyes’ team have not looked convincing in recent games and even fell to their third defeat in the English Premier League at home to West Bromwich last Saturday.

Wednesday night the Red Devils travel to face a difficult Shakhtar Donetsk side in Group A, but welcome return of Robin van Persie, who missed the team’s last three games with a thigh injury.

Another top side looking to bounce back from a defeat over the weekend is Real Madrid, who take on FC København at the Santiago Bernabeu without summer world record signing Gareth Bale, who is out with an injury.

French side Paris Saint Germain take on Benfica at Parc des Princes, Juventus hosts Roberto Mancini and Galatasaray at Juventus Stadium, while Anderlecht and Olympiakos lock horns at Constant Vanden Stock, Bayer Leverkusen face Real Sociedad and the early kick off at Petrovski Stadium sees CSKA Moscow going up against Viktoria Plzen.
