Kenny Dalglish made four adjustments to his team that was beaten at Wembley at the weekend, but was still able to take the victory in the last home game of the season.
“It was an excellent performance,” the boss said on Liverpool FC website. “It’s been seen a few times before here, but the result hasn’t always been as positive as that.
“So the great thing for us is that the performance was matched by a result that they thoroughly deserved.
“Also, the fact that the supporters can get away from the last game of the season with a little bit of a smile on their faces is great.
“And I think that the way they stayed behind and showed their appreciation speaks volumes for them.”
He added: “I don’t think there’s any other place in the Premier League or elsewhere whose supporters would be there to show their appreciation like that.
“For us, we’re just pleased, and the players are pleased, that we gave them the performance that they deserved. And that we put a smile on their faces.”
An own goal by Mickael Essien and strikes from Jordan Henderson, Daniel Agger and Jonjo Shelvey prevented Chelsea from finishing in the Champions League runnings.
Winger Stewart Downing continued his struggles to score league goals after missing a penalty just before the halt-time break.
Ramires scored the goal for Chelsea, which will now finish sixth in the league table standings.
