LONDON (Sporting Alert) — He may have been on target in Reds’ crucial 3-2 win over West Ham United in the Barclays Premier League over the weekend, but Joe Cole is still not needed at Anfield, according to Liverpool FC transfer rumors.
Cole, who has been struggling to win a consistent run in Liverpool’s first team, has been linked with a move back to French outfits Lille, who he spent a loan spell with during last season.
However, the England midfielder has insisted he wants to stay and fight for his place at Liverpool and his performance off the bench on Sunday where he scored an equalizing goal, shows that he wants to be considered for more games in the future.
“All I’m doing is giving my all in training every day, and trying to keep my place in the squad when we play Villa – that’s all I can do,” Cole was quoted as saying.
“It has been difficult recently but I have scored in my last two appearances and I want to keep the sequence going if I can. And when I’m called upon I will do the best job I can.”
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, according to the Mirror has no plans for Cole in his future setup and will allow the former Chelsea star to leave in January.
But where would he go?
Well, he has options.
Lille have already said they would gladly take him back on a permanent deal, with his former club West Ham are also open to reunite with a player of his calibre again.
Getting rid of Cole would pave the way for Liverpool to bring in unsettled Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge as Rodgers seek help for Luis Suarez.
Sturridge, who is currently injured, has not been considered too many times when he’s healthy this season, despite the struggles of Fernando Torres and the England forward is ready to leave Stamford Bridge to save his international future.
Rodgers would love to field a three man attacking frontline of Suarez, Sturridge and Raheem Sterling and many believes this is possible.
Liverpool are desperate for Champions League football again and wants to build team to push for a top four place in the second half of the season.
Many doubt that they can get past the likes of Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea and Tottenham to claim one of those slots, but they are still believing and so too is a former player and manager Phil Thompson.
“Absolutely, why not?” Thompson told the club’s official website at Liverpoolfc.com.
“A few weeks ago you might have thought it was a bit too far away. Four points off fourth spot is a fantastic achievement.
“We’ve been chipping away so we’re still in there and I think there is a great opportunity to get into a Champions League spot.
“I like to see a level of consistency. When you see results coming and you go on long unbeaten runs – and we’re capable of doing that all the time, no matter where we are in the league – it normally starts with a few unsuspecting draws.
“Unbeaten in two, then unbeaten in three… Now we’re on a run. That’s what we’re seeing with Brendan’s sides. With three victories in a row, it’s great.
“Let’s not get carried away or look too far ahead – just the next game. It has put us in a great position.”
