Man United doesn’t need another left-back

MADRID (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United are dismissing reports linking them with a move for Real Madrid left-back Marcelo in the next transfer window.

The Daily Express is reporting that the Red Devils are looking to sign Marcelo in the January transfer window as they seek some stability in the backline.

However, according to a club official, Manchester United are not interested in signing the Brazilian World Cup star, as they already have a wealth players, including England youngster Luke Shaw, who are capable of playing in that position.

Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo, Tyler Blackett and Reece James have all played at left-back before and manager Louis vaan Gaal believes that if he should ever need to make adjustments on the left side, he already has enough cover.

At the same time, the English Premier League side has been struggling to keep a clean sheet this season and Vaan Gaal is indeed targeting more experienced players to protect goalkeeper David de Gea.

But the Dutchman wants center-backs and he plans to test the market again in January in the hope of securing at least two players who can help the team finish in the top four.

One man hot on Van Gaal’s radar is Barcelona and former Manchester United center-half Gerard Pique.

The Spanish international departed Old Trafford for the Camp Nou for £5million in 2008, after making just 12 league appearances under Sir Alex Ferguson in four seasons.

Pique became an instant hit with the Spanish giants after his move during Pep Guardiola’s tenure.

However, the 27-year-old has fallen down the pecking order and is no longer a regular starter for new manager Luis Enrique, following the capture of Jeremy Mathieu.

Summer recruit Thomas Vermaelen, who moved from EPL side Arsenal on a £15million deal, is also not too far away from returning to full fitness and he is also understood to be ahead of Pique when he comes back.

With this in mind, Pique could very well welcome a move back to Old Trafford, knowing that he would get regular first team football.

Man United missed out on signing Vermaelen after the World Cup, this after it was certain he would have completed the move to Old Trafford.
