MANCHESTER (Sporting Alert) — Manchester United FC manager Sir Alex Ferguson hailed the brilliance of summer signing Robin van Persie, following the striker’s performance in the FA Cup tie at West Ham on Saturday.
Van Persie came off the bench score a last-gasp equaliser for Manchester United in stoppage to earned a replay with West Ham in the English FA Cup and Ferguson was full of praises for the Dutchman.
The boss was also delighted with Ryan Giggs’ outing as well after his delightful pass found van Persie to finish.
“You have to say, the manner of the goal, the pass from Ryan Giggs, the first touch from Robin van Persie and his finish were absolutely world class, absolutely fantastic,” Ferguson said on Man Utd official website at www.manutd.com.
The Manchester United manager added: “I think it’s a challenge, coming to a new club, but his experience… he’s a well-established international, he’s a mature age now and he’s brought that maturity to our forward line.
“His performance coming on was tremendous.”
Ferguson commented that after being given a life in the tournament, his team will be going all out to win the entire competition this season.
Tom Cleverley had finished brilliantly to give the Red Devils the lead before Joe Cole and James Collins combined twice to steal the advantage.
With his needing a goal, Ferguson called on his super stars to save his team from what would have been a shocking upset and they certainly answered the call.
“We want to stay in the competition and have a go at winning it,” the manager said on manutd.com. “We’ve had some terrible draws over the years and been knocked out early, we don’t enjoy that.
“For us to be losing 2-1 in that game was amazing given the chances we created and the football we played.
“But when you play West Ham you have got to defend your crosses from the set pieces because they are brilliant and the best team in the league at that, but we didn’t do it.
“Twice, from the same position, James Collins scored from the same type of cross from Joe Cole and we lost two goals.”
He added: “Really, you could say it was a travesty but they are good at it and you have to admire that part of their game.
“Given some of the football we played and the chances that we missed, we should have really been home safely.
“It was a fantastic piece of play for our first goal and we played a lot of good football. We maybe should have been ahead at half-time but as I say, we have to defend better than that.”
Manchester United weren’t the only Barclays Premier League team to face replay in the third round of the tournament as Sunderland, Wigan, Stoke City and Fulham were also held.
Defending champions Chelsea were big winners on the day, dumping fellow Premier League club Southampton 5-1 on the road, while Tottenham also scored a 3-0 win over Coventry in their game.
Norwich blew away Peterborough United 3-0 as well and Reading and Aston Villa got needed wins. It was bad news again for Newcastle this season after getting the boot by Brighton.
