(Sporting Alert) — As expected, Manchester United are without striker Wayne Rooney for today’s English Premier League clash at Newcastle United.

Rooney, United manager David Moyes revealed, suffered an injury to his toe during the Champions League quarter-finals first leg tie with Bayern Munich in midweek.

With the England international out and Robin van Persie also missing with a knee problem, Javier Hernandez will lead the Manchester United attack.

The team also includes Juan Mata, Shinji Kagawa and Ashley Young, with Darren Fletcher and Marouane Fellaini starting in the central midfield.

Other changes sees Anders Lindegaard being named in goal, while Antonio Valencia starts at right-back, Patrice Evra is at left-back and Chris Smalling returning from injury to partner Phil Jones at center-back, as Moyes makes eight changes from the team that played to a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich.

Newcastle United, meanwhile, make three changes from the side that suffered a 4-0 defeat to Southampton, as Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Hatem Ben Arfa and Moussa Sissoko replaced by Davide Santon Dan Gosling and Luuk de Jong replace.
