The midfielders are suspended for the contest after they both picked up their fifth bookings of the season in Sunday’s Premier League draw against the Hammers.

Manchester United also have further fitness worries in midfield, as it’s still unclear whether Michael Carrick is healthy enough to feature after he missed the game over the weekend.

This means there could be a surprise recall for Bastian Schweinsteiger, who was on the bench for the Red Devils on Sunday.

Schweinsteiger could start alongside Ander Herrera, although manager Jose Mourinho could play captain Wayne Rooney in that position.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is expected to lead the attack again, while Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are all in contention.

Left-back Luke Shaw could return to the backline, but fellow defenders Eric Bailly (knee) and Chris Smalling (toe) are out because of injuries.

“We can turn our luck in the next game in the EFL Cup. It doesn’t matter the competition, it doesn’t matter the game, we just want to win. We want to fight for everything and we want to make our fans proud,” Herrera said after the last meeting.

Meanwhile, West Ham United are without striker Diafra Sakho, who suffered a hamstring injury in the win over Manchester United in the Premier League at the weekend.

Fellow striker Andy Carroll is reportedly edging close to making his return from a knee problem but is unlikely to feature at Old Trafford.

After missing the last meeting, centre-back Winston Reid is available after serving his one-match ban.

Manchester United (squad): De Gea, Romero, Blind, Jones, Darmian, Fosu-Mensah, Rojo, Shaw, Valencia, Carrick, Herrera, Mkhitaryan, Lingard, Mata, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Young, Depay, Martial, Rashford, Rooney, Ibrahimovic.

West Ham United (squad): Adrian, Randolph, Collins, Ogbonna, Reid, Cresswell, Kouyate, Noble, Obiang, Fernandes, Nordtveit, Payet, Lanzini, Antonio, Feghouli, Ayew, Sakho, Zaza, Fletcher.
