MENDOZA, Argentina (Sporting Alert) — Lionel Messi scored twice and Argentina defeat Uruguay 3-0 at home in a South American World Cup qualifying game on a busy Friday night of football.

Also netting in the win was Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, as Argentina move into second place in the points standings with 10 points.
Argentina enjoyed most of the possession during the game, but was unable to breakdown the visitors until the second half.
After his teammate, including Angel Di Maria, Marcos Rojo and Aguero all wasted chances in the opening 45-minutes, captain Messi finally delivered for the home fans when he scored in the 66th to break the deadlock at Malvinas Argentinas stadium.
The Barcelona forward then added another from a free kick in the 80th, before Aguero stuck his team’s third in the 75th.
The win saw Argentina moving up first place in CONMEBOL with 17 points from its eight matches.
Argentina have now scored 18 goals and conceeded six.
Ecuador are sitting second on the table with 16 points with Colombia third on the same point standing.
