MIAMI (Sporting Alert, Box Score) — The Miami Heat jumped on the Atlanta Hawks early and then held out for a 92-87 victory in their opening preseason game at AmericanAirlines Arena Monday night.
Miami rushed out to a 25-16 first quarter lead and then a 49-30 lead at half-time.
Entering the fourth quarter the home side had a 72-56 lead, but a series of changes saw the Hawks rallied to trim the deficit.
However, the gap was too huge and the defending NBA champions, playing without several key players, including Dwayne Wade held on for the win.
Chris Bosh led the way for the Heat with 21 points and five assists, while Roger Mason Jr. added 14 points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench.
Rashard Lewis added 11 points, with LeBron James, playing just 21-minutes on the night, finishing with nine points, five assists and five rebounds in the win.
Mike Scott paced the Hawks with 13 points and six rebounds, while Paul Millsap had 12 points and Al Horford added 10 points, nine boards, four assists and three blocks in the defeat.
DeMarre Carroll scored 10 points for Atlanta, who shot just 17-percent from three-point range.
