NEW YORK (Sporting Alert) — New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers all recorded wins in their NBA playoff first round openers on Saturday.
In the opening game of the playoff, Carmelo Anthony scored 36 and six rebounds and guided the Knicks to a battling 85-78 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 1 of their series at Madison Square Garden.
Jeff Green led Boston with 26 points and seven rebounds in the defeat.
Also in Eastern Conference action, the Brooklyn Nets put on a brilliant second half performance in beating the Chicago Bulls 106-89 at the Barclays Center, a game that was broadcast live on ESPN/WatchESPN.
Leading point guard Deron Williams paced the Nets with 22 points, seven assists and three steals, while star center Brook Lopez added 21 points in the win.
Solid contributions came also too from Gerald Wallace, who had 14 points and six boards, while Reggie Evans added 13 rebounds for Brooklyn, who used its entire bench in the win.
Over in the Western Conference, Denver Nuggets, led by Andre Miller, who finished with 28 points, including the game winning late layup, beat the battling Golden State Warriors 97-95 in Game 1 in their playoff series.
Ty Lawson and Wilson Chandler struggled to make shots, going 0-for-7 from 3s and combined for just 11-for-31 from the field.
Klay Thompson scored 22 points for the Warriors, with Stephen Curry, who went 7-for-20 from the floor, adding 19 points and nine assists in the loss. David Lee ended with 14 rebounds and 10 points for Golden State.
In the final game on the night, the LA Clippers used a fourth quarter run to pull away from the Memphis Grizzlies and took a 112-91 victory in their series opener at STAPLES Center.
Leading 69-75 heading into the fourth quarter, the Clippers went on to outscore the Grizzlies 37-22 to take the win, with Chris Paul leading the way with 23 points and seven assists. Chauncey Billups added 14 points in his starting role, while Eric Bledsoe finished with 15 and Jamal Crawford, 13 in reserve roles.
Jerryd Bayless paced Memphis with 19 points, while Marc Gasol had 16 and Zach Randolph, 13.
