The United captain and center-back has been out for eight months with an injury he sustained last season, but has been training well and gets the welcoming start.

He will join his old pal Rio Ferdinand in the center of the pitch, while Antonio Valencia starts at right-back and young Michael Keane start at left-back in the absence of Patrice Evra, who returns home to be with his wife for the birth of his new child.

Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck will start upfront, with Ashley Young, Paul Scholes Michaesl Carrick and Nani in midfield. Anders Lindergaard will start in goal.

“It’s a fitness exercise for us,” says assistant manager Mike Phelan, who will manage the Manchester United team tonight in the absence of Sir Alex Ferguson.

“We are starting players, who have just returned from the Euro, while Valerenga are already into their season, so it should be a good game.”

Amongst the players on the bench for United are summer signings Nick Powell and Shinji Kagawa, alongside David De Gea, Phil Jones, Javier Hernandez, Anderson and Dimitar Berbatov.
