
(SportingAlert) — The following are the NFL preseason results from Week 1 as several rookies got their chance to impress respective head coaches before the start of the regular season.
NFL preseason Week 1 action ran through Aug. 7 – Aug. 9, with the likes of New York Giants, Washington Redskins, New York Jets, Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills all securing wins in their first outings.
On Saturday, rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel threw for 63 yards and rushed for 27 as the Cleveland Browns suffered a narrow 13-12 defeat to the Detroit Lions. Manziel, who came into the game as a backup in the middle of the second quarter for starter Brian Hoyer, went 7 of 11 on pass completion.
Meanwhile, Carson Palmer went 5 of 5 for 84 yards and a touchdown, as the Arizona Cardinals hammered Houston, 32-0 in Bill O’Brien’s first game in charge with the Texans.
It was also a rough debut for Houston’s quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who 6 of 14 passes for 55 yards and two interceptions, playing the entire first half.
At the other end, Arizona rookie Logan Thomas played the entire second half, and he completed 11 of 12 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.
In other NFL preseason Week 1 scores, the Tennessee Titans beat the Green Bay Packers, 20-16, Kansas City Chiefs picked up a 41-39 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, the New York Jets edged past the Indianapolis Colts, 13-10, while the Washington Redskins defeated the New England Patriots, 23-6.
Star quarterback Tom Brady and most of his Patriots starting teammates didn’t play in a game, while Robert Griffin III played one series for the Redskins where he completed 2 of 4 passes for 9 yards.
