No. 10 Creighton beats No. 9 Arkansas 90-87 at Maui Jim Maui Invitational

MAUI, Hawaii (Nov. 23, 2022) – In an entertaining matchup of top-ten teams, No. 10 Creighton got the better of No. 9 Arkansas 90-87 in a highly competitive meeting in the semifinals of the 2022 Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Tuesday.

Ryan Nembhard scored 25 points on 6 of 12 shooting with 3 for 4 shots from 3-pointers and 10 of 12 from the free throw line. Nembhard also grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists. 

Ryan Kalkbrenner added 21 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks and Baylor Scheierman finished with 20 points on 7 of 10 shooting with three 3-pointers and seven rebounds for the Bluejays (6-0) who beat No. 21 Texas Tech 76-65 in the opening game of the tournament on Monday.

Meanwhile, the ninth-ranked Arkansas offense was led by Anthony Black and Ricky Council IV who scored 26 and 24 points, respectively in the defeat. Black, who was 10 for 18 from the field, also had six rebounds, six assists, and two steals.

Trevon Brazile added 17 points on 50% shooting (7-14) and hit three 3-pointers to go with his six rebounds and three blocks for the Razorbacks (4-1) who were losing for the first time this season.

As a team, Creighton shot 58.5% from the field overall and was 50.0% from 3-point range. The Bluejays also made 21 of their 29 attempts from the free-throw line.

The Razorbacks, in the meantime, 47.1% from the field and 70 attempts, while making 8 of 20 tries from 3-point range.

Arthur Kaluma's tipped shot put Creighton ahead 81-79 with 1:52 to play before a Ryan Kalkbrenner dunk separated the scores again for good with 1:14 reaming.

The defensive plays by the Razorbacks made it tough for Creighton, after creating 21 points off turnovers compared to three for the Bluejays. But in the end, the Big East side which lead 40-34 at halftime and led for most of the contest, was able to hold out for the win.

Creighton will next play No. 14 Arizona in the Championship game tonight after the Wildcats knocked off No. 17 San Diego State 87-70 in the second semi-final game of the 2022 Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Tuesday.
