Novak Djokovic looks to defend Australian Open – First round

MELBOURNE (Sporting Alert) — World No.1 and defending champion Novak Djokovic heads the list of star players down for the opening round of the Australian Open 2013 tournament, which starts on tomorrow.

The three-time champion will open the defense of title with a clash against French player Paul-Henri Mathieu, who is ranked 58th in the world.

The Serbian should have no problems winning this one, but the the road to the final will become more interested as he moves on in an attempt to become the first man to win three in a row.

In other opening round contest, Lleyton Hewitt will have his hands full against No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic, No. 12 Marin Cilic of Croatia will take on another home fan Marinko Matosevic, while No. 5 Tomas Berdych (CZE) and Michael Russell (USA) will line-up.

Elsewhere, No. 20 Sam Querrey (USA) and Daniel Munoz-De La Nava (ESP) setup dates, Cedrik-Marcel Stebe (GER) and No. 15 Stanislas Wawrinka (SUI) meet and No. 11 Juan Monaco (ARG) meets Andrey Kuznetsov (RUS).

The likes of Roger Federer, Andy Murray, who will start against Dutchman Robin Haase in the first round, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Tomas Berdych, David Ferrer and Juan Martin del Potro are all hoping to dethrone Djokovic of his Australian Open title and prevent him from creating history.
