Tiger Woods says he is happy with his first day performance, especially in the early goings, but admits that he will look to push on and improve his overall game on Friday.
“Hopefully I can play a little bit better than I did today (Thursday),” Woods said. “The ball was flying forever out there today in the afternoon.
“I had 200 yards on the 18th hole and missed a little 8 iron that flew flag high, so the ball was traveling. It may not travel as far tomorrow morning, but I’m sure it will heat up.”
Woods, played 5 under par for 67 to finish the day tied for fourth place and he wants to get a move in the second round.
Asked what he’s looking to improve on the second day he said, “Just overall, I need to strike the ball a little better than I did today.
“I missed all the balls in the right spot, which is nice. It’s always nice when I can do that, and, as I said, make some saves.”
Roberto Castro, who had an eagle and seven birdies in a nine-under-par 63 card, is the surprised leader after the first round, with Kevin Chappell second.
“It was a lot of fun. First time around here I was pretty nervous on the 17th, but birdied 17 and 18 which got things rolling into the front nine,” Castro said.
“Something solid was what I was hoping for. I’m usually really good at getting myself way out of it and having to dig myself out of a hole.”
