Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski gave co-hosts Poland the ideal start to the tournament with a well placed header in the 17th minute to send the sea of red and white jumping.

However, the Poles came out flat in the second half and Dimitris Salpigidis took advange of a helpless Wojciech Szczesny in goal and scored the equaliser in the 51st minute of play.

Greece could have, and maybe be should have won the game from the penalty spot, but Giorgios Karagounis missed the spot kick.

Szczesny was sent off in the 69th minute for Poland, but before that Sokratis Papastathopoulos was dismissed in the first half for two bookable offenses.
