Captain and star midfielder Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool the early lead when he fired home from the penalty spot to send Asmir Begovic the wrong way in the 2nd minute after Luis Suarez was brought down in the box by Ryan Shawcross.

Martin Skrtel had played a wonderful ball over the top for Suarez to run on to and Shawcross, in his attempt to keep him from cutting inside, pulled the Uruguay striker down and Gerrard made no mistake from the spot kick.

However, poor defending at the other end cost Liverpool with Jon Walters leveling things up with a fine finish in the fifth minute.

Liverpool defender Daniel Agger tried to clear a long pass but only managed to help it on towards his own goal and after Skrtel slips, Walters calmly found the bottom corner of the goal.

But Stoke wasn’t finished yet, as more poor defending this time by Gerrard left Kenwyne Jones free to head home a corner delivered by Michael Kightly in the 12th minute.
