Real Madrid must move on, says Xabi Alonso

MADRID, Spain (Sporting Alert) — Following their disappointing exit from the Champions League, Jose Mourinho and his Real Madrid team will not turn their attention back to the league.

Real Madrid were beaten on penalties by Bayern Munich after both sides played to a 3-3 aggregate score on Wednesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for Real Madrid, but Arjen Robben scored a vital 27th minute penalty kick to ensure that visitors grabbed a priceless away goal.

After scoring from the spot to give Madrid the lead, Ronaldo, however, was one of the high-profiled players who did missed in the shoot-out – much to the disappointments of their fans.

The Spanish leaders, after the emotional day, got a rest today from Mourinho, who will recall them back on Friday to begin preparation for Sunday’s clash with Sevilla in league action.

Mourinho, although very disappointed to have not reached the final, was proud of the efforts from his men.

TIME TO MOVE ON NOW

Midfielder Xabi Alonso, who offered some condolences to Ronaldo after he missed has urged his teammates to move on.

“We came close, but we have a young and driven team,” he said. “We had a good chance because we played at home, but we also faced a great opponent.

“Both sides slowed down in extra time because we were tired.”

He added: “It’s a shame we didn’t keep the favourable result longer….It was a shame and we must move on from this as soon as possible.”

The focus now remains in the league where they are favourites to dethrone Lionel Messi and Barcelona of their La Liga crown.
