MADRID (Sporting Alert) — Gonzalo Higuain scored twice and Cristiano Ronaldo was also on target as Real Madrid thumped Mallorca 5-2 in the Spanish La Liga on Saturday.
The win saw Jose Mourinho’s side cutting Barcelona’s lead at the top of the La Liga standings to 10 points, while going four clear of Atletico Madrid, whose slumping form of late has caused some concerns.
Mallorca, battling hard for survival, took the lead in the sixth minute through Emilio Nsue, but Gonzalo Higuain equalised eight-minutes for the home side.
Mallorca went ahead again when Alejandro Alfaro scored in the 21st minute and his team took a 2-1 lead into the half-time interval.
However, it was all Real Madrid in the second half and goal from Ronaldo, Luka Modric, Higuain and substitute Karim Benzema sealed the easy win for Mourinho’s team.
Elsewhere, fourth placed Real Sociedad beat Valladolid 4-1, with Antoine Griezmann netting a brace and Imanol Agirretxe and Xabi Prieto adding one each.
Roberto Soldado was on target for Valencia in their 3-0 win over Betis.
Leaders Barcelona can go back 13-points clear of ninth place Rayo Vallecano.
